FAMILY HEALTH
The University of Minnesota is proposing to design and build a new academic health care center located in the Duluth Medical District. The initial focus will provide students an interprofessional education and practice in medicine and pharmacy, in collaboration with the two Duluth health care systems, Essentia Health and St. Luke’s.

DULUTH FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Duluth Fire Department is finishing onboarding 12 new recruits this week – the largest class to come in at once in decades. As unique as their overall size, this group is also starting on rigs differently than other classes thanks to new COVID-19 precautions.

DULUTH POLICE REPORT
Criminal complaints filed in St. Louis County District Court earlier this month charged 21 alleged members of a Chicago-based Drug Trafficking Organization (DTO) with participating in a criminal organization that transported substantial quantities of fentanyl and heroin from Chicago to Duluth.

EVENTS
Community Connect is an event designed for people experiencing homelessness or economic hardship. It will be held Thursday, January 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Damiano Center, 206 West 4th Street in Duluth. The purpose of the event is to provide a variety of free services for people who are struggling economically, and to help connect them with resources in our community.

ESSENTIA HEALTH
Essentia Health has joined a nationwide study to evaluate repurposed medications in the search for effective, safe treatments for mild-to-moderate COVID-19. Repurposed medications are those already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for other indications.

CITY OF DULUTH
The City of Duluth operations crews are responding the report of a water main break located on the 5800 block of Roosevelt Street. Water has been turned off on Roosevelt Street from Grand Avenue to North Central Avenue. The duration of the repair is unknown at this time.

St. Luke’s is one of only eight organizations in the country to be honored with a national award of excellence.

CITY OF DULUTH
The City of Duluth announced the hiring of James Gittemeier as the senior transportation planner. He replaces Kris Liljeblad, who retired in 2021.

Essentia Health is now offering same-day pediatric care at Essentia Health-Lakeside Clinic. “We are happy to expand pediatrics to another location. This will make it more convenient for our families,” said Dr. Gordon Harvieux, who will provide pediatric care at the Lakeside Clinic.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
Zam Plante and Dominic Thomas scored two goals each to lead Class 1A/No. 1-ranked Hermantown past Superior 8-0 in a high school hockey game Thursday night at historic Hermantown Arena. Plante added three assists and Garron Opsahl had eight saves for the Hawks, who improved to 15-1 overall.

A West Duluth family has been displaced after a fire that started in the basement caused their home to be condemned. Duluth Fire crews responded to the report of a bed on fire at a split-level home on the 600 block of South 65th Avenue West, just after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Duluth Fire responds to encampment fire
The Duluth Fire Department today responded to a report of smoke below I-35 near the Mesaba/Superior Street exit. Crews from Lincoln Park arrived on scene first and reported heavy flames and smoke coming from below the freeway.

After careful consideration, study and discussion, the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery and Essentia Health have decided to demolish the current St. Mary’s Medical Center building once construction on the new hospital is complete.

The Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer will retire from the company later this year. As part of a planned transition, Adams will remain at the company until June 2022. County Board approves contract to replace 21 bridges and box culverts
The St. Louis County Board on Tuesday unanimously approved a “bridge bundling” contract totaling $23.9 million to replace a total of 21 bridges and box culverts. The contract, awarded to Redstone Construction, LLC, of Mora, is the largest road and bridge contract the County has ever put out for bid.

For the first time in the Duluth Police Department’s history, there is a mother-daughter police duo. Officer Angela Robertson has been a sworn officer with DPD since 2009, and later this week her daughter, Maddy Robertson, will be sworn in as a new officer.
