Dick & Carrie Show highlights new virtual expo

The popular “Dick & Carrie Pre-Race Talk Show” is going virtual for this year’s 45th annual Grandma’s Marathon weekend.

Longtime race announcers Dick Beardsley and Carrie Tollefson have traditionally hosted their show live and in-person, but this year it will be aired exclusively as part of the first-ever Essentia Health Virtual Expo on Grandma’s Marathon weekend.

“This is exciting for us because it gives us the opportunity to greatly expand the reach of the show,” Registration & Expo Director Laura Bergen said. “Instead of saying you need to be in Duluth at a certain time, people this year can literally be anywhere and still listen to Dick & Carrie and our amazing lineup of guests.”

This year’s lineup includes two elite runners who each have the chance to do something extremely special – win Grandma’s Marathon as a Minnesota resident. Tyler Jermann would be the first men’s winner from Minnesota since Beardsley himself in 1982, and Dakotah Lindwurm would be the first women’s winner from Minnesota since Janis Klecker in 1987.

Also on this year’s show will be Brian Reynolds, a double amputee and six-time world record holder who will be competing in the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, and Lisa Baskfield, who owns Nature’s Gem and specializes in runner training and recovery using CBD.

The “Dick & Carrie Pre-Race Talk Show” will air exclusively as part of the 2021 Essentia Health Virtual Fitness Expo at 4 p.m. on Friday.

This year’s virtual expo will also feature a special edition of the new “Gearing Up for Grandma’s” podcast with special guest Scott Keenan. The founder of Grandma’s Marathon and executive director for 37 years, Keenan recently released a new book detailing the history of the race called My Journey to Grandma’s Marathon: History & Heroes.

“Scott was there at the very beginning and obviously has meant so much to our race and organization over the years,” Marketing & Public Relations Director Zach Schneider said. “What better way to celebrate our 45th anniversary than to relive some of the great tales of Grandma’s Marathon?”

That video podcast episode can be seen, also exclusively as part of the 2021 Essentia Health Virtual Fitness Expo at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The virtual expo, which is free and open to the public, will also feature more than 25 vendors who will be showcasing the latest products and services available in the running and athletic industry. Many of those vendors will be available for live, online chats with the public at 3 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday to answer any questions or concerns.

Virtual tours of the Grandma’s Marathon racecourse will also be provided as part of the virtual expo on both Thursday and Friday at 11 a.m.

There will also be an in-person option for the Essentia Health Fitness Expo, which will be open from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday and from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. on Friday at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.
