The U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” list recently was released, and Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth is tied for fourth-best among 141 hospitals evaluated in Minnesota.
St. Mary’s Medical Center is the top-ranked hospital in Northeastern Minnesota.
“It’s truly an honor to be ranked among the top hospitals in Minnesota,” said Janice Schade, senior vice president of operations for St. Mary’s Medical Center. “With an ongoing global pandemic, the entire care team worked tirelessly to provide high-quality, award-winning care to patients battling COVID-19 while finding positive outcomes for patients across several specialties. This ranking is a true testament to our commitment to our patients and the communities we serve.”
St. Mary’s Medical Center was rated as “high performing” — scoring 5 out of 5 — in 11 procedures and conditions. Those are:
. Colon cancer surgery
. Heart failure
. Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
. Heart bypass surgery
. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement
. Heart attack
. Kidney failure
. Knee replacement
. Hip replacement
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester was ranked the top hospital in the state and nation. Abbott Northwestern in Minneapolis and St. Cloud Hospital were ranked second and third, respectively, in Minnesota. St. Mary’s Medical Center was tied for fourth with Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids and Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
St. Mary’s Medical Center was also ranked fourth-best in 2020.
In compiling its list, the U.S. News & World Report evaluated data on more than 4,500 hospitals in 15 specialty areas of care. The rankings are based on each hospital’s patient outcome and experience, care-related factors and expert opinions obtained through a physician survey.
